During an Instagram Live interview, Mark Zuckerberg expressed an unusual historical overview of virtual reality. One that appeared to include everything from cave drawings to the development of the first cameras along with the images they produced as actually being some of the earliest forms of vr. When you stop and think about it, Mark is right.
The human quest to expand the reach of our sense of presence has been around since at least as far back as recorded history can take us and likely long before. It is an innate part of curiosity to expand the range of our senses beyond the limits of our immediate location not only to record and covey past events but also to provide concrete stimulation that helps us imagine what it is like to be in different places.
So, though most of us usually think of vr as having its origins deeply rooted in the 20th century, it would seem it actually started much further back than that.
